2011 Awarded Grants
1. Assombro Institute for Science Education – Las Cruces- $3000. To promote science, the I’m a Scientist Too Project allows kindergarten through 5th grade students to engage in authentic science in their schoolyards, removing common stereotypes about science and allowing students to see themselves as scientists.
2. Assistance League of Chaves County – Roswell- $3000. Two programs are funded: Operation School Bell provides new school clothes and supplies for children in need from grades K through 8; Kids are Pretty Special provides basic clothing supplies, stuffed animals and car seats for children who must be transported from abusive homes.
3. The Bike Works- Silver City- $2000. The Earn-a-Bike Program allows youth the opportunity to obtain a bike in exchange for volunteering at the facility where participants learn how to maintain and repair their bicycles and how to safely and efficiently ride bicycles through bicycle related activities.
4. Camp Corazones - Santa Fe & Statewide- $4,000. Provides a summer camp at no cost to children age 5 to 12 years and their families for children with or impacted by HIV/AIDS.
5. Cancer Services of NM — Albuquerque — $2,000. 2011 Explora Night for Kids with Cancer (July 23, 2011) will provide a buffet dinner, an educational talk by a pediatric oncologist, T-shirts, door prizes, face painting, carnival style games and time to meet other families and more. This event will be open to all NM pediatric cancer patients/survivors and their families.
6. Canones Early Childhood Center – Rio Arriba County – $3000. Project Literacy Outreach brings early childhood education, child development and early/emergent literacy services to an underserved population of rural isolate, minority families in northernNew Mexico.
7. CASA First Judicial District — Santa Fe, Los Alamos & Rio Arriba Counties — $3,000. Court Appointed Special Advocates provide qualified, well-trained and committed volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children and to mentor youth aged 14-18 on probation in the juvenile justice system.
8. CASA Fourth Judicial District – Mora, San Miguel and Guadalupe – $3000. Court Appointed Special Advocates trains community volunteers to advocate for children ages birth through 18 who have been removed for their homes because of abuse and/or neglect.
9. Gerard’s House – Santa Fe – $3,000 Provides emotional and psychological support for children in Northern New Mexico who are experiencing a life crisis because of the death of a loved one. The long-term goal is to help end self-destructive behaviors because of unresolved grief and loss.
10. IMPACT Personal Safety – Santa Fe & Albuquerque – $3000. Empowers children by teaching them to prevent and defend themselves against verbal, physical, and sexual violence.
11. Junior Service League of Hobbs – Hobbs- $4000. Project Superstar Shoes provides shoes to 200 students in elementary, junior high and high school boosting self esteem of needy, at risk students.
12. Many Mothers – Santa Fe County- $2000. Skilled volunteers share their expertise to a help a family with its practical, educational and emotional concerns providing vital support when a new baby joins the family.
13. New Mexico Alliance for Children – Lincoln County and South Central New Mexico – $3000. Establishes a permanentLiteracyCenter for 150 preschool-age children attending head start program and provide literacy training for teachers.
14. New Mexico Suicide Intervention Project, Inc. -Northern Santa Fe and Rio Arriba Counties – $3,500 Provides school-based suicide prevention education and skills training for youth, parents and teachers. Appropriate post-suicide intervention services and training to school communities through crisis teams which provide an organized response in the event of a youth suicide.
15. Ojo Sarco Community Center – Ojo Sarco- $3000. The Blue Spring Book Club promotes reading for5 youth with books and activities in this isolated village.
16. Oso Vista Ranch Project – Ramah Navajo and Zuni Reservations- $2000. Summer day camps for yuth that include equine growth and learning activities, low rope courses that culminate in a community rodeo.
17. Samaritan House, Inc. – Las Vegas – $2000. Provides emergency shelter, food, clothing and support services for families and their children that become homeless and assist in process for permanent and secure housing.
18. Self Help, Inc. – Los Alamos, Rio Arriva and Northern Santa Fe – $3000. Assists students in need with items such as pencils, calculators, notebooks and other essential items needed to succeed in the classroom.
19. Valencia County Literacy Program – Valencia County- $3000. Family literacy pre-school provides child centered instruction to develop emergent literacy in children ages 0-5 with parents reading daily to their children and staff providing a lending library and numerous educational activities.
20. Wings for L.I.F.E., Roswell and surrounding areas- $2000. Wings for L.I.F.E. (Life-skills Imparted to Families through Education) provides educational, behavioral and social skills to families (especially those with loved ones incarcerated) in the community and to adults and juveniles in detention. Wings for L.I.F.E. also provides youth development for elementary school children that nurtures positive behaviors valued by society.
21. Youth Heartline – Taos – $4,000 – Family Empowerment Program provides group therapy and aftercare advocacy on behalf of children and families dealing with issues of child abuse and trauma. The goal is to break the cycle of abuse through free group support and therapy inTaosCounty.
